Technological mediation without a promise to resolve moral conflict

Abstracts

A tool for collective decisions can help people navigate disagreement without claiming to settle the moral question behind it.

In my article “The Unresolvable Tension Between Moral Individualism and Collective Governance: Can We Ever Find Balance?”, I consider technological mediation alongside adaptive governance and a culture of pluralism. The argument is that none fully resolves the conflict between individual freedom and collective responsibility, but they may help people coexist with it.

That distinction matters when building decision-making tools: helping people work through competing claims is a more defensible goal than promising a final answer to them.
