Breastfeeding The Second Time Around: why prenatal classes still matter for repeat moms

My article Breastfeeding The Second Time Around makes a point that's easy to overlook: even mothers who breastfed successfully before benefit from attending prenatal classes again before a second baby arrives. The reasoning is straightforward — no two babies latch or feed the same way, so treating the second round as familiar territory can leave a mother unprepared for a different set of challenges. The article ties this to two habits that matter more than prior experience alone: honestly reviewing what didn't go well the first time, and building in patience and consistency from day one instead of expecting things to click automatically because they did before. That's the piece I keep coming back to when I talk with second-time moms — the first breastfeeding experience is useful information, not a guarantee, and prenatal preparation is what turns that information into a smoother start the second time.
