Propose a channel change; don’t assume access

Abstracts

Moving a conversation to another platform is better treated as a request than an assumption.

In “Rules of social media engagement,” I make the case that no platform is inherently professional, personal, polite, or rude. What fits depends on the relationship, the subject, and the urgency. If another channel would work better, propose the move respectfully.

That distinction matters in professional relationships: choosing an appropriate channel is also about respecting the access someone has given you.
